How big a tank should they have?

  • i got 2 orandas yesterday they are around 3.5 inches, what size of tank volume is prefable for them? can you tell me in litres please thanks a lot.

  • Orandas, and goldfish in general, are messy fish. The more mess a fish makes, the bigger the tank you will want because it will help dilute the mess (and gives more surface area at the bottom for the 'good' bacteria to grow alowing the conversion of the waste into less harmful by-product)

Go with the biggest tank that you can afford - no smaller than 20 gallons (20 gallons = 75.7 litres), though if you can get a 35 gallon that might be better.

Enjoy your new fish! Orandas are beautiful fish and you've chosen a great hobby!

  • Ideally they need at least 55-75 litres each or more, over filtered and put through the nitrogen cycle.

They are still babies and should get at least 6-7" long, the largest fancy goldfish on record was an Oranda called Bruce, he was 15" excluding fins!
