ACTS lays off 650 workers because of Air Canada capacity cut, surging fuel costs
MONTREAL _ The former Air Canada Technical Services has laid off 650 engine and aircraft maintenance workers in Montreal and Winnipeg because of capacity cuts at Air Canada (TSX:AC.B) and turmoil in the airline industry.
ACTS notified employees Tuesday about the immediate layoffs that affected 250 full-time employees and 400 others, most of whom worked on contracts to overhaul two Air Canada aircraft models.
ACTS, the Dorval-based aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul company, said yesterday it has made a six-year alliance with Hamilton Sunstrand, a U.S. maker of aerospace and industrial parts and owned by United Technologies.
Deferring maintenance costs doesn't sound all that comforting...
Suspect this relates in part to the XM program for the A333s. Conversion of the narrow body fleet is now completed -- at least all A319s, A320s and A321s on the booking site now have stars after them -- and the last B763s are being finished off. Older aircraft are being "retired" and they're the ones with the heavier maintenance schedules, ergo less work for the shops.
Does ACTS do JAZZ's work, or did JAZZ keep that operation at its YHZ and YVR operations?
