Can anybody shed any light on the following hotels:
1. Renaissance Wien
2. Vienna Hilton
3. Vienna Marriott
4. Vienna Plaza Hilton
Of which of the above would you consider a 5-star hotel? I'm just going to be there one-two nights.
I've stayed at the Hotel Sacher before - nice but a tad 'grand' for my tastes. I was also thinking of the Das Triest.
Thanks!

I have tentatively made a booking at the Marriott (and I'm paying for it in $$ - not in points). I'll check out the 2 Hiltons and see which one is better - though the one with the airport bus terminus under it sounds good . I'm only there overnight enroute to Salzburg (where I will be staying at the Sheraton. Anyone has info on that?) for 2 nights.
Thanks again.Cancelled the booking at Marriott and rebooking at the Vienna Hilton only for the sheer convenience of the airport bus. My meeting is postponed in Salzburg so I'm staying overnight at Vienna only. Guess I'll be stocking up on Sachers for presents!Celestar340- Just noted that the Sheraton Goldener Hirsh also provides a $50. credit for use in the hotel gift shop etc when/if you book with Amex FHR, if that is possibly of any significance to you.We loved the Marriott. It has a beautiful atrium. We got a half price deal through Entertainment Publications. Check it out! We sent someone out to buy breakfast at a deli about 2 blocks away, to the left as you face the hotel. We had the best food at about a quarter of the hotel's breakfast cost. The concierge told us about it. Great location for transportation. Love that city!Marriott is typical of well managed Marriott hotels and well located on the Ring. A few steps away is one of the best coffee houses in Wien, the Schwarzenberg, good food, great people watching. But if you are not addicted to 5 star hotels, you might try the Carlton Opera Hotel, a couple of blocks from the Opera, or the Pension Altstadt in the Spittelberg quarter, a 15 minute walk from the Opera. A suite there costs about as much as a single at Marriott or Hilton; if you are interested, email me and I'll send you more info. One of Wien's best small restaurants, the Boheme, is a couple of blocks away. If you like superb food and soft classical music as background, you will loke this place. And you may bump into Pavarotti while you're there!
Cheers,To me these hotels are largely comparable with a slight edge to both Hiltons over Marriott and Ren, but especially the Hilton Vienna downtown, which Rudi recommends, both for the food and location.
My recommendation is to go outside these four, however if you really want a great place, and try the Hotel Imperial Vienna, a small wonderful place which I feel is the best in this wonderful city! Accordingly, it may also cost $100 more per night. I think it is an Amex Plat FHR, so you can get an uypgrade and free comtinental breakfast.I take it you're using your Hilton or Marriott points to pay for the hotels. We generally stay at the Vienna Hilton because my husband used to work there. It's got a great location across from Stadtpark and I understand since we were there last they have refurbished the whole hotel (and boy, did it need it). While it is a very nice hotel, the rooms are not large so be prepared for that. This is a normal size room in most European hotels. The great advantage to this hotel is that underneath the hotel are the busses that go to the airport.
The Vienna Plaza Hilton is newer and I have no info on that except it's in a very nice location. I don't know anything about the other two.
The first time I went to the Prinz Eugen restaurant in the Vienna Hilton, it was absolutely excellent. Great service, ambience and food. Then we went about 5 or 6 years ago for dinner and it was horrible. Food and service were below par. We don't know what was wrong.
But perhaps Rudi's been there in the last five or so years and knows it's good again. I hope so.That's the Sheraton Hotel, period. They also have the Goldener Hirsh, on the other side of town. I was there last year. Very nice and very, very small and personal. Like many of the nicer Sheratons in the luxury collection, it simply lacks the Sheraton name. Again, this is (segment) marketing that I just don't understand. If I ran Sheraton and I had a nice place, I'd display the SHERATON name prominently. For example, many do not know the St. Regis, with the great restaurant Lespinasse, is a Sheraton/Starwood property. They say all Sheraton are....and so on. They have some of the finast properties in certain cities. Anyway, I hope this info helps you in some way. Enjoy Salzburg.doc - I didn't know that there are 2 Sheratons in Salzburg. I'm staying at the one on Auerspergstrasse. Which one is this?the Vienna Hilton - the Prince .... Restaurant is even a Michelin * Restaurant (closed on Sundays). Walking distance from Vienna Center (but so are the others). And the Airport bus stops right there.I'm now at the Hilton. And basically it is an okay hotel. But it is expensive for what they dare to charge! The Executive Floor's evening cocktails consisted of Pretzels and pretzels. Oh a few pieces of pastry.
I think I will splurge more and stay at the Sacher next time!

Especially if you can stay at the (Sheraton) Goldener Hirsch Hotel on Getreidegasse! So small, and lovely, and a little out of the way (south, by University Plaza), also I think an Amex Plat FHR property as well.
The Sheraton Hotel (north, downtown by conv. ctr.) itself is also quite good. As I recall, it did not use to participate with the Sheraton program in the days of SCI/SET, but I beleive that it does now! I believe it is about twic the size of the GH and still only about 150-175 rooms. Also, they do have an Ex Floor there as I recall.
In summary, both are just fine in my view! have a great stay in Salzburg in any case.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
