Thanks for the clarification. Since I have an old laptop and maxed out my RAM a long time ago, I did not research the deal further.
Sorry to hear that they were not honoring the coupon in NY. :(
Anyway, I told the employee that it came from the Best Buy website -- he said that it although it looked like a Best Buy website, it actually was not (the link starts with images.bestbuy.com, which I would think is a Best Buy website, but he insisted that it wasn't). He asked if I had gotten the link to the coupon from a forum; I said no, that I'd gotten it from a friend, and he said that my friend must've gotten it from a forum. He said that I could speak with customer service if I wanted to, but that they would not honor it because it was a scam.
Yes!!!!! :D :D
I went into Best Buy and it turns out that this was supposed to be a targeted coupon to customers who bought complete systems. However, Best Buy did a very poor job of marketing and failed to control how the coupon was distributed and how the coupon was worded. I spoke with the store manager, who was very nice and helpful. He explained all this to me and offered to sell me the memory at his cost which was only a few dollars cheaper than the posted price. He said I could call Best Buy corporate if I didn't feel that was acceptable. I said that would be great and he got them on the phone for me. I really didn't have to explain anything they just said to put the manager back on the phone. I did and next thing you know I'm getting the memory for free. I told him not to worry about the installation as I would do it myself. He gave me a receipt in case I needed to return it if it was defective etc, and off I went. Good job Best Buy on taking care of the customer.

Ummmm, why would you go to Staple's for a best Buy coupon?
If you meant Best Buy, did you point out to the employee that the coupon came from the Best Buy website, not a 3rd party site? I guess maybe Best Buy is trying to scam itself. :D
I'll post once I try it.
thanks for the heads up!!
Now, it is possible that someone discovered the coupon on Best Buy's website and it wasn't ready for public consumption , or that it was only e-mailed to select customers and it was discovered online and is being used by more people than they intended. But it IS a bestbuy coupon. I'm going to give it a shot here in CA and see what happens.
They pretty much knew all about the coupon and that it's floating around the internet. They told me that it was supposed to only be sent to customers that had already purchased complete systems and was supposed to have the restrictions printed on it. Someone at corporate or the ad agency sent it out as a link and didn't have the restrictions printed on it. They were supposed to have the retractions posted in the stores but as they said, if they didn't honor it they would probably have legal issues with bait and switch, false advertising, etc.
I just said that someone emailed me the link and I printed out the coupon. (which is pretty much true).
I think that if you try to redeem it and they try to tell you know, politely ask them to put you in touch with their corporate office and see what happens.
