Going Thru Security w/o Boarding Pass

  • I have usually used the kiosk to check-in to avoid the lines and the chance of a grumpy agent so I rarely go through security w/o a boarding pass of late unless I am running late. Well this weekend I had the most unpleasant experience with YYJ security. The Aeroguard employee refused to even acknowledge my e-ticket from AC that clearly states "for those not checking luggage you may obtain a boarding pass at security by simply presenting the e-ticket to security". The guy refused to even look at me or allow me through! He soo rude and stubborn that I stood my ground and asked to speak with a supervisor as I stood over to the side. I won't bore you with the details, however, 2 AC employees and an Aeroguard supervisor later, they still refused to budge citing 9/11 even! I had earlier mentioned to AC lead that YVR, YYC and YEG all allow for e-ticket access to security so why would YYJ be any different? No deal.

Well...I called the station manager this afternoon at YYJ and she was very apologetic and get this - Aeroguard YYJ called over to Aeroguard YVR who informed them that e-tickets allow for the same access to gate areas as boarding passes do! Duh! I mentioned to the station manager that I wasn't necessarily upset her or her lead yesterday but the other agent was clueless and I requested an apology from YYJ Aeroguard given the conduct of their 2 employees.

Has anyone else had this problem this year?

  • No. Was surprised how little attention security paid when I advised I had an E-tkt confirmation and held it up for inspection. Some didn't even look at it, just waved me through. I've found that there's usually a lag until the smaller airports mirror customs or security procedures of the bigger centre's.

  • I received a phone call late yesterday afternoon from the Aeroguard manager from YYJ who apologized to me stating "unfortunately, we were enforcing out-of-date directives from post-September 11 that have since been updated as of late last year and we have not updated or informed our staff". Now that takes care of that issue, however, the one AC gate agent was just as clueless and I am going to send in a letter about her conduct as well. I don't feel that I should ever expect attitude from an AC employee especially when she was dead wrong in her statements.

  • I don't know what's the big deal with access... you still have to go thru security checks like everyone else to get into the boarding area. It's not hard to get a boarding pass if someone is intending to do something stupid.
